(from our president, Beth Luckenbach) Welcome to another year of education, fellowship, and service in our Beta Zeta meetings! I attended the 93rd Texas State Organization Convention in Lubbock in June along with other members, Mollye Long, Karen Loeffler, Helen Usener, Donna Itz, Andrea Hudson, Amy O’Neil, Joanne Davis, and Jo Murphy. There were over 600 DKG members from all over Texas attending. We saw familiar faces from past conventions, met new friends, and were offered many opportunities for learning at the different breakout sessions. We enjoyed the inspirational speakers and their messages. Bear Mills, author and 1997 Wal-Mart Foundation Teacher of the Year, spoke about “Being a Person of Hope in a World Where Hope is on the Endangered Species List.” He asked us to remember “that student” who was a challenge in our teaching career! Some of us have had more than one and others may have been fortunate to not have had any. One of mine, who is in high school, is doing amazing things! I never imagined he would do so well. Lubbock Christian University Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Steve Gomez, emphasized that not one player makes a team. It is important to work together. Dr. Helen Popovich, International Parliamentarian, spoke about saying “Yes”, and not being afraid to ask someone to do something because you’re afraid they might say no. That is something I need to work on! The Unifying Project for this convention was Shelby’s Bridge, a non-profit organization that runs a gift and thrift shop and café in Sudan. They train and help individuals with disabilities. Older students learn culinary skills, counting skills, and life skills. The store offers paid employment and job skills programs. Before the convention, chapters were asked to donate gift cards to help Shelby’s Bridge continue to help individuals with disabilities. Over $5,000 in gift cards were donated!! The tragedy in Uvalde continues to be in our minds and hearts. At the incoming presidents’ training, I happened to be sitting with the incoming president of their chapter. She teaches at a private school in Uvalde, as does the other member that was there with her. She said that the outpouring of love from all over the world is helping the town. I did get her name and address and sent a card to their chapter from ours. The Area 6 workshop was held in San Antonio on August 6th. Members attending were Jo Murphy, Joanne Davis, Karen Loeffler, Jerrie Dooley, Mollye Long, Amy O’Neil, and myself. Some of us were presenters and the rest of us enjoyed the infor- mational sessions and fellowship. I am looking forward to seeing you on Sept. 26th in the FMS Library. We will meet our new transfer member, Lisa Roebuck; and our Area 6 Coordinator, Jennifer Garcia, will also be joining us for the meeting.
